Counseling that makes room for your full identity, culture, and experiences
Culture can shape how we understand ourselves, our relationships, our responsibilities, and what we believe we are supposed to do.
For some Asian American clients, this may include navigating expectations around family, achievement, responsibility, relationships, identity, or success. You may find yourself balancing your own needs with the expectations of family or community, or trying to figure out which values are truly yours.
These experiences are not the same for everyone. Your cultural background, family history, generation, immigration experience, and individual identity all shape your experience in different ways.
As an Asian American psychotherapist, I bring an understanding of these experiences into my work while recognizing that you are the expert on your own life and have your own unique experiences and perspectives.
When the Way You’ve Always Done Things No Longer Fits
Many of us learn early how to meet expectations, work hard, take care of others, and keep things together.
Those ways of navigating life can serve us well. But there may come a point when they no longer fit the person you’ve become or the life you want to create.
You may be asking:
- “What do I actually want, separate from what is expected of me?”
- “How do I honor my family while also honoring myself?”
- “Why do I feel stuck when I’ve done everything I was supposed to do?”
- “How do I define success and a meaningful life?”
Therapy can provide a space to explore these questions without having to choose between your cultural identity and your individual needs.
What We Can Explore Together
Our work may include:
- Family expectations and changing family roles
- Achievement, perfectionism, and the pressure to succeed
- Boundaries and relationships
- Cultural and generational differences
- Identity and belonging
- Career decisions and transitions
- Burnout, stress, anxiety, and emotional overwhelm
- Life stages and changes in what feels meaningful or important
The goal isn’t to tell you what you should value or how you should relate to your culture or family. It is to create space to understand your experience, clarify your own values and needs, and decide how you want to move forward.
